Most people don't realize that your diet can have a great influence on whether or not you will develop a number of cancers. These cancers can include cancer of the stomach, the colon and the liver. Your chances of developing breast or bowel cancer are also increased or decreased by your diet.
You don't have to make drastic changes to your diet and your diet does not have to be boring. But, eating the right kinds of food each day can greatly reduce your risk. Basically, following these three steps can help give you a fighting advantage over cancer.
1. EAT PLENTY OF FRESH FRUITS AND VEGETABLES
WHY? The antioxidant vitamins C, E and Beta-carotene are found in these foods. Antioxidants are what fight cancer causing free radicals.
WHAT ARE FREE RADICALS? Free radicals are produced in your body from sunlight, smoking, drinking alcohol or caffeine and pollutants.
WHICH FRUITS AND VEGETABLES SHOULD BE EATEN? Eat plenty of colorful fruits and vegetables. These are usually the best for you.
2. EAT PLENTY OF HIGH FIBER FOODS
WHY? Fiber helps you to pass your waste on a regular basis which rids the body of cancer causing radicals and chemicals.
WHAT FOODS ARE HIGH IN FIBER? Good sources of high fiber are beans, cereals, pasta and rice. Whole wheat rather than enriched should be your choice for all fiber products.
3. EAT LESS SATURATED ANIMAL FAT
WHY? By reducing your intake of saturated fat, you are reducing your risk of cancer or heart disease.
WHAT FOODS SHOULD BE AVOIDED? Avoid high-fat foods such as meats and full fat dairy products. Stick with products that have low or no fat.
Here are some ways that you can help ensure that you follow the above diet.
a. Buy fresh fruits and vegetables, cut them up immediately and pack them. Fruits and vegetables often go bad because they are forgotten or not readily available to be eaten.
b. Don't fully cook your vegetables. Steam or stir-fry them. They will retain most of their vitamins this way.
c. Cut down on high fat/sugar snacks. Don't buy them and you won't be tempted to eat them.
These steps can't guarantee you won't develop some kind of cancer, but they will give you a good head-start!
