Providing your cat with a well-balanced diet is not an easy feat. Animal nutritionists contend that once your cat reaches adulthood, commercial cat food alone is probably not enough to provide your pet with the needed level of vitamins and nutrients.

A proper diet for a cat contains plenty of proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, fats, and minerals. It’s typically said that an adult cat should only eat between six and eight ounces of food each day. If you feed your cat much more than that, you severely risk overfeeding your cat and may see weight gain. You can of course add water or milk with their meals in order to provide needed supplementation.

Nutritionists tend to say that commercial cat food alone will not be enough to provide your pet with a balanced diet. Several times a week, you will want to add fresh meat to your cat’s regular diet in order to give it the needed foods. Meats like fresh fish, pork, beef, and chicken can give your pets needed proteins. The more proteins your cats eat, the less excrement your pet likely will have and the better they’ll feel in their overall health.

Animal organs such as kidneys, livers, lungs, brains, and giblets are great for cats. You can serve these organs to your cats cooked or uncooked. Either way is safe and will give them needed nutrients and vitamins, mainly proteins. You can add these organs to their normal commercial food, or give them to your pet separately. It really makes little difference.

When your cats are growing up as kittens, you’ll likely need to feed them as many as four or five times a day. The frequency of feedings should decrease as they age. By the time they reach a year or two old, you should be able to only feed your cats once or twice a day. You should feed them at the same time each day, so they’ll know when to expect to be fed.

You also need to be sure you give your cats the necessary amounts of water. Especially if you feed your cat dry food, you need to give them as much water as they need. Water is important to avoid dehydration and to keep their kidneys functioning properly. Make sure the water you give your cats is fresh. If you don’t have water out for your cats and they want water, they’ll find water wherever they can--either from the toilet bowl or from plants. Both these alternatives can be dangerous for your pets.
