Who gives you strength, protection, joy, love, and life? God the Father gives all these things to His children. Knowing that you lie within the safety and sovereign protection of the Almighty God is a security that compares to nothing on earth. Psalm 90 is a Psalm of distress and pain, God is far from the people and Moses is pleading with God and God answers Moses in Psalm 91.
Psalm 91 talks about the strength, security, protection, joy, etc. that comes from God. Verses one and two tells us that whomever dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. God is the Almighty; He is El Shaddai the Almighty God and protector of all. He is the God that covers you totally with His love, life, joy, strength and protection. He is your refuge and your fortress and in Him you can trust. A certain trust is made with God based on the security found in the character and care of God and the blessings of security, protection, and love.
Psalm 91:1-2 also give us four names used for God.
“Psalm 91:1 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say of the LORD, [He is] my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.”
1. Most High -- El Elyon -- God's strength and sovereignty.
2. Almighty -- El Shaddai -- protector of all.
3. Lord -- YHWH--Yahweh -- meaning sacred, holy.
4. God -- Elohim -- the first true God -- Thee God.
Psalm 91:1-2 tells us also to let the Lord God be our shelter, our refuge and our fortress. A fortress is a stronghold of a permanent nature. So placing our trust in God is placing our trust in something that is permanent. Verses three through eight go on to tell us more about His protecting nature and loving care for those that place their trust in Him.
“Psalm 91:3 Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, [and] from the noisome pestilence. 4 He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth [shall be thy] shield and buckler. 5 Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; [nor] for the arrow [that] flieth by day; 6 [Nor] for the pestilence [that] walketh in darkness; [nor] for the destruction [that] wasteth at noonday. 7 A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; [but] it shall not come nigh thee. 8 Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.”
These verses tell us that God will deliver us from anything that tries to come against us. Anything that Satan tries to throw against us, God has already made an escape route. God has already covered it; He has already given us the protection, the security, the safety, the healing and the strength. God has covered it all, and we need only place our trust in Him and He will deliver it to us for He is our God and in Him, we can trust.
If we have truly place our trust in the comfort of God than we should be able to rest secure at all times in all dangers, and in all circumstances knowing that, we are resting in the shadow, the shelter of the Almighty God. God will send ministering spirits, angels to keep a watch over us and to keep us fully in His protection. He says that no evil shall befall us, nor shall any plague come near our dwelling. Why, because we have made the Lord our refuge our habitation. We have decided to dwell in Him.
“Psalm 91:9 because thou hast made the LORD, [which is] my refuge, [even] the most High, thy habitation; 10 There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling. 11 For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.”
When we sit around at night and the wind is blowing, and the trees waving in the wind and the branches and leafs make images against the curtains and walls, from shadows of darkness, and little bumps sound and we grip our hands till the knuckles turn white—what are we doing? We are dwelling in fear! We are living in fear of things we cannot even see, things that we hear and do not recognize—but why? Why sit and let every bump and shadow, and sound in grip our life with so much fear?
If we can dwell in fear than we can also dwell in security, which is the opposite of fear. God has given us the opportunity to live in security. God has given us the opportunity to live without fear. We can look at like this: If someone would walks up to us and says,
